Opera star to sing at Ripon International Festival

Sir John Tomlinson GotterdammerungSir John Tomlinson, the world-renowned operatic bass, will perform at Holy Trinity Church, Ripon on Friday 13 September – a rare opportunity to hear one of the world’s great voices in an intimate setting and one of the highlights of Ripon International Festival.

Famous as Wotan in Wagner’s Ring Cycle at Covent Garden and Bayreuth, and for roles in Vienna, New York, Berlin, Paris and other great opera houses, Sir John will give a costumed and semi-staged performance of settings of Michelangelo’s poems, including sonnets on aspects of love by Britten, Wolf’s simple and heart-wrenching lied, and Shostakovich’s Suite on the timeless themes of love, death, and art.

Accompanied by David Owen Norris interpreting the challenging piano part, Sir John takes the role of Michelangelo and delivers a performance of intensity and beauty which after his visit to Ripon he will go on to sing at Frankfurt Opera.

Festival highlights also include a magnificent programme of Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Brahms by the Royal Northern Sinfonia at the Royal Hall, conducted by the inspiring Janusz Piotrowicz, and the celebrated cellist, Raphael Wallfisch, playing Bach Cello Suites.
