Downing-StreetAndrew Jones MP has paid tribute to Baroness Thatcher, following her death yesterday (8 April 2013)

Andrew Jones MP commented:

I was saddened to learn of Baroness Thatcher’s death, and send condolences to her family at this very sad time for them. She had been poorly for some years and had not been seen in public recently.

Margaret Thatcher was among our greatest peacetime Prime Ministers, and one of the leading politicians of the twentieth century.

When she came to power in 1979 many believed Britain to be ungovernable, but her strength, optimism and belief in freedom changed that. She made our country once again a respected voice across the globe.

Her role in promoting freedom, especially in Eastern Europe, made her an iconic figure and a beacon for oppressed people.

Whatever people thought of her, you always knew she was a passionate patriot who was brave in tackling issues and achieved a great landmark in becoming our first female Prime Minister.
