Knaresborough delivery office may face closure

6 March 2013

The news that the Knaresborough delivery office may face closure has sparked concern from local MP Andrew Jones.

The Post Office (PO) is holding an internal consultation on whether it should transfer mail operations from Knaresborough to the Harrogate delivery office, with a decision due in early May.

The MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, Andrew Jones, has asked for reassurance that if the decision is made to close the delivery office, service quality for local residents will not be affected and jobs will be protected.

The PO is reviewing the operational efficiency and commercial practically of its operational sites one of which is the Delivery Office on Stockwell Road.

andrewjonesAndrew, who helped out at the Knaresborough Delivery Office last month as part of the ‘walking in your postman’s shoes’ scheme, has voiced his concerns to the PO.

Andrew said:

The Post Office is looking at ways of saving money to fund improvements to its services and closing the Knaresborough Delivery Office is one option. I want to see a thriving Post Office, easily accessible to customers.

The Post Office is a critical part of our local services. I am concerned that this proposal could lead to job losses and a poorer service for customers and have sought reassurance from the Post Office that this will not be the case.

I am determined to ensure that the services provided to local residents will not disappear if, in the end, they decide to go ahead with this option.

  1. It’s pity that the M.P. doesn’t know the difference between Royal Mail (delivers the mail) and the Post Office (sells stamps).
