Harrogate College has been chosen to host the regional Sparks and HIP National Apprentice of the Year competition on 7th February amongst only six host colleges nationwide to find the UKs most talented electrician and plumber.

The competition sees colleges from the North West region as far afield as Liverpool enter students in a series of timed practical activities while been assessed by a panel of judges. Each participant will be given £100 worth of tools with the regional winner going to compete at the national competition for the chance to win £1000 of Screw Fix vouchers.

Harrogate College Electrical Apprentice Jacob Graham will represent Harrogate and the local area at the competition testing his skills in electrical installation working to industry standards. Jacob entered last year’s competition to become 2012 regional winner and hopes to do well in this year’s competition.

The finalists from the regional heats will then compete in Swindon to be crowned National Apprentice of the Year 2013.

Apprentice Jacob Graham said:

I am doing the competition because it’s a good experience and good fun. It also gives me a chance to check out the quality of other peoples work and I would like to represent my college.

From what I have witnessed at previous years events Jake will have tough competition, all the competitors work was to a very high standard. Jake is very enthusiastic about competing and due to his age this is his last opportunity to enter this event. All staff and his class colleagues wish him well.

We are absolutely delighted to be holding the event at Harrogate College this year. The calibre of students emerging from their electro technical department is second to none and so it was an obvious choice for us to hold the event here. We very much look forward to watching the students battle it out!
