Wimbledon champion serves up tennis master class at The Academy Health Club

11 December 2012

A reigning Wimbledon champion has served up a tennis master class at a Harrogate tennis and fitness club.

As part of The Academy’s 18th birthday celebrations – 2012 Wimbledon Doubles Champion Jonny Marray – together with former Davis Cup regular, Danny Sapsford – offered coaching tips to members plus played against coaches and members on the indoor courts.

Following three hours of training, the pair took part in a hard-fought match against longstanding tennis coach, Mat Parry, who used to play with Marray on the junior circuits, and 18 year old Mika Brown.

Philippa Shackleton, Managing Director of The Academy, said:

Having both Jonny and Danny was a real coup for The Academy and Jonny’s attendance proved a real draw for members and non-members alike.

Over the three hour training sessions, he and Danny coached players and offered a series of tips on how to improve their game.

Watching Jonny on the court playing against two of our coaches was fantastic, and he proved just why he is the reigning Wimbledon Doubles Champion. He is simply world class and was a delight to watch.

That said, Mat and Mika both rose to the challenge and produced some superb tennis against the champs. I know they were nervous beforehand, however, they didn’t display any nerves on the day and they certainly held their own. Well done team!
