Western helps Leeds company design furniture

2 December 2012

At Western Primary School, providing a range of stimulating learning environments is key to successful education delivery. Blending lessons in good nutrition with innovation, Western teachers and children have been working with Leeds based educational furniture designers KanGarRoo to evaluate a new range of healthy eating stations.

Foundation and Key Stage 1 children have been testing table-top equipment that is designed to encourage youngsters to learn the principles of a balanced diet and enjoy preparing and eating nutritious food. Adjustable heights, raised food display areas, knife rests, large wipe-clean areas and optional waste chutes combine to provide interesting set-up and preparation areas for single use or teamwork in children as young as three years old.

Sarah Jones, Head of Key Stage One, said:

We have been involved in two evaluations so far, and have really enjoyed helping KanGarRoo identify important aspects of the product development. The project has engaged children and adults both in our mission to embrace innovation, provide exciting environments, and offer memorable lessons. The children have really enjoyed preparing sandwiches and fruit salads. The workstations can be used in small groups as break-out sessions and are great fun.

Steve Hoffman, Designer at KanGarRoo, said:

We believe that practical lessons in nutrition can benefit children from a very early age. The healthy eating station is designed to help nurseries, child-minders and primary schools engage children in the fun and importance of eating well. Western is a great school that is clearly committed to education through innovation and it has been very useful to have our intended audience try out the equipment so we can make it absolutely fit for purpose in all types of educational environment. We are delighted that they have been able to work with us on developing the product for market.
