New campaign for coast with the most

10 July 2012

A new campaign has been launched today, at the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate, to encourage more people to visit the Yorkshire coast to help boost the economy of the coastal regions.

Welcome to Yorkshire – the county’s official tourism agency – has created its first ever coastal campaign to help entice visitors to the towns, city and award winning beaches that make up the Yorkshire coast.

The campaign was launched at the Great Yorkshire Show on a giant beach made up of 15 tonnes of Scarborough sand – which also played home to the show’s first ever sharks, on loan from Sea Life Scarborough.

The campaign features a pocket guide alongside a coastal online section, and both turn the spotlight on the major coastal destinations.

These include Bridlington, Filey, Hornsea, Hull, Scarborough, Staithes and Whitby, to name just a few with the full list available at www.yorkshire.com/coast

The campaign features different themes for visits to various well-known coastal towns as well as some hidden gems. Some sections include The Great Escape (about towns and villages), Buckets of Fun (about beaches), Catch a Wave (about surfing spots) and Wide Open Space (exploring things from abseiling down cliffs to rockpools).

The campaign is being backed by Yorkshire Water which is investing millions in improving Yorkshire’s bathing water quality to meet new much tighter European standards.

Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said:

Our dramatic and beautiful coastline is yet another jewel in the crown of Yorkshire. Not many counties can boast three national parks, seven cities and a stunning set of seaside towns and beaches. This new campaign rightly shouts loud and proud about our amazing coast and we are looking forward to more visitors discovering that for themselves.

Lee Pitcher of Yorkshire Water, said:

We are extremely proud of the region’s fantastic coastline which is why we’re working in partnership with Welcome to Yorkshire and supporting this campaign as well as investing millions in improving bathing water quality for generations to come.

The pocket guides will also be available from TICs, events and festivals and to order.
