Annual speech day at Belmont Grosvenor School

3 July 2012

Pupils’ achievements during the past academic year have been honoured at Belmont Grosvenor School’s annual Speech Day and Prize Giving Ceremony.

West Yorkshire-based children’s author Tom Palmer was guest speaker at the event, held in a marquee in the grounds of the independent prep school, based at Swarcliffe Hall, Birstwith, near Harrogate.

Headteacher Mrs Jane Merriman detailed the highlights of the past academic year at Belmont Grosvenor School – rated “outstanding” by a members of the Independent Schools Inspectorate – and told assembled parents, pupils and staff that, with the 2012 Olympic Games just weeks away, the sporting tournament’s core values were an inspiration to all at Belmont Grosvenor School.

Mrs Merriman said:

The values of excellence, friendship and respect underpin the Olympic Games. They bring together sport, culture and education for the betterment of society. These core values are an inspiration for us as individuals and to us as the Belmont Grosvenor School community.

The school’s Olympic connections are strong. Former pupil Andy Hodge is competing at this year’s Games in the coxless fours, hoping to repeat his Gold medal rowing performance in Beijing four years ago.

Mrs Merriman told her audience that with the Olympic ideals underpinning daily life at Belmont Grosvenor School, the school also prided itself on adding value in the education it provided, and challenging all children.

Mrs Merriman said:

The strength of BGS is, and always will be, that it’s a school where children don’t get lost, where the focus is on the character of each child, where children can be the best they can be in anything they want.

Belmont Grosvenor is a school where we allow children to become independent learners and where staff facilitate the learning. Above all this is a school where I believe excellence, friendship and respect resonates throughout.

Following speeches, prizes were handed out to pupils for a wide range of achievements from traditional subjects including maths, geography and French, as well as the Headteacher’s Award for All Round Contribution, Enthusiasm and Achievement.

Belmont Grosvenor School, based at Swarcliffe Hall, Birstwith, is set in 20 acres of grounds and, along with its Magic Tree Nursery, caters for children aged from three months to 11 years. For more information or to arrange a tour call 01423 771029 or visit www.belmontgrosvenor.co.uk
