Police praise public following pig lorry collision

25 May 2012

TrafficRichmond police are thanking the public for their help following a collision on a minor road just off the A66.

It occurred near to the Smallways Country Club at 8.10am on Friday 25 May 2012, involving a livestock lorry which was transporting pigs.

As a result of the collision the lorry ended up on its side and the pigs had to be released. The animals were herded into nearby fields with the assistance of the public.

The lorry driver suffered only minor injuries.

Traffic Constable Tony Leonard, of North Yorkshire Police’s Roads Policing Group, said:

I would like to thank all of the members of the public who stopped and helped at the scene. Their efforts and assistance was invaluable in both minimising the suffering of the animals that were trapped in the lorry and getting them to safety away from the road once they had been released.

Sadly a few of the pigs did die as a result of the incident. However, I am positive it would have been far more traumatic for the rest of the herd without everyone’s help.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, press option 2 and ask for Tony Leonard.
