G&S takes jubilee musical trip to the Tower of London

20 May 2012

Robin Withey who is playing Sir Richard Colmondley, Lieutenant of the Tower. In the Queen’s jubilee year it is fitting that Harrogate Gilbert and Sullivan Society is taking a theatrical trip to the Tower of London to perform The Yeomen of the Guard for its annual production at Harrogate Theatre from 23 – 26 May.

The Yeomen of the Guard is set in the Tower of London during the 16th century and is the darkest, and perhaps most emotionally engaging, of the G&S operas. As usual Harrogate G&S Society will bring stunning sets and costumes as is routinely expected of this talented local society.

There is considerable humour, including a lot of pun-laden one-liners in the story. However those familiar with the trademark G&S satire and topsy-turvy plot complications will know that this show makes way for high drama and intrigue as well as two very reluctant engagements, rather than the usual numerous marriages! In any case, The Yeomen of the Guard is an operatic treat perfect for music lovers and G&S aficionados alike.

The Yeomen of the Guard will be performed at Harrogate Theatre from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 May 2012 at 7.30pm each evening and 2.30pm on Saturday.

Tickets priced £15 and £16 plus concessions and free child tickets for most performances are available from Harrogate Theatre Box Office telephone 01423 502116 or online at www.harrogatetheatre.co.uk
