Dancing pupils tell the story of Gerald the Giraffe who couldn’t dance

There were rocking rhinos, tango-ing lions and monkeys who did the cha-cha when pupils at a leading North Yorkshire prep school staged their ballet show.

Dozens of youngsters at Belmont Grosvenor School, recently rated ‘outstanding’ in an Independent Schools Inspectorate inspection, took to the stage to perform Gerald – the Giraffe Who Couldn’t Dance – in front of a packed audience of staff, students and parents.

Organised by the Harrogate-based Lynton Academy, which runs weekly ballet classes for youngsters from pre-reception to Year 5 at the co-educational school, the show told the story of a group of shipwrecked children who end up on an island filled with exciting animals.

Around 50 pupils at the school enjoy weekly ballet classes, based on the Royal Academy of Dance curriculum and run by the Lynton Academy. These form part of a wide and varied range of extra-curricular activities organized for pupils at Belmont Grosvenor School, which include craft, engineering and eco clubs as well as Mandarin and Spanish speaking classes.

Jane Merriman, headteacher at Belmont Grosvenor School, said the Lynton Academy dance classes were a popular part of the weekly activities at school – and the production had been a great success.

 Jane Merriman said:

It was a colourful spectacle and everyone who took part, from children in pre-reception through to Year 5, thoroughly enjoyed themselves, as did the parents who watched.

The story of Gerald the Giraffe was great fun and we look forward to the next production.

Belmont Grosvenor School is set in 20 acres of grounds on the outskirts of Harrogate. Along with its Magic Tree Nursery, the school caters for children from three months to 11 years.
