Highfield musicians sing up for gold

27 April 2012

Pupils from Highfield Prep, part of Harrogate Ladies’ College (HLC), have flourished in the arts this month with a succession of outstanding musical achievements.

Starting the month on a high with a Sing Up Gold award, Highfield demonstrated its use of singing across curricular and extracurricular activities. As well as using vocals to aid development in lessons, Highfield choirs have raised money in the local community through concerts and singing events, helping to fulfil judging criteria for the gold award.

Showcasing further musical talent, the Highfield Senior Choir and Orchestra took winning titles in the Harrogate Competitive Festival, with both groups winning the Year Six and under categories. For the Highfield Orchestra, this year was a seventh consecutive win for the team.

Highfield’s Head of Music, Clare Gray said:

Musical achievements have been abundant at Highfield over recent months. Receiving a Sing Up Gold award was particularly rewarding, as it demonstrates the varied singing that takes place at the School.”

Singing is at the heart of the music curriculum at Highfield. We have used singing to enhance significant moments in school life as well as fostering community links and raising money for charity. I am very proud of all the pupils who have been involved.

Demonstrating the flow of musicianship throughout all parts of HLC, the Harrogate Ladies’ College Chapel Choir also won both of its categories for a second consecutive year.

Opening its music rooms to other schools in the area, Highfield Prep has recently hosted a unique Strings Enrichment Day. Forty pupils came together for an all-day strings workshop where they rehearsed and performed a concert later that day.
