Billy Liar stage show

Last night was the opening night of Billy, the musical based on Billy Liar at Harrogate Theatre.

Following the day in the life of Billy Fisher, a dreamer and a liar with two fiancés, one girlfriend and a dull job as an undertaker’s Clerk, the story set in 1960s Yorkshire draws some surprising parallels to the dreams of fame inspired by the likes of today’s TV talent shows.

Although not a well known musical, the opening night’s audience were extremely enthusiastic about the show. Ripon Amateur Operatic Society were congratulated on a superb performance which had the appreciative crowd in stitches at times due to the witty script written by Likely Lads and Porridge creators, Dick Clement and Ian la Frenais.

The musical numbers by the legendery John Barry were met with gracious applause and dance routines with cheers from an impressed audience.

The show continues until Saturday including a Saturday matinee. Tickets are available at Harrogate Theatre Box Office, 01423 502116, www.harrogatetheatre.co.uk
