Ahoy There – Bettys & Taylors Lands Another Award

5 April 2012

Shiver me timbers! Captain Rummage, Bettys & Taylors’ very own pirate who turns trash into treasure as part of the family firm’s recycling project The Cone Exchange, has received a top honour from the High Sheriff of North Yorkshire, Mrs Alexandra Holford.

The Captain (or Bettys & Taylors’ employee Chris Powell MBE to those in the know) has been singled out for his outstanding work, with the help of the local community, putting unwanted stuff to good use.

Chris recycles redundant items into craft materials and sells them to buy educational books and DVDs for schools. He also collects mobile phones, spectacles, stamps, holiday change and printer cartridges and then gives them to charities like Oxfam which uses them to raise money.

Chris said:

It’s not every day a pirate receives a reward for good behaviour.

I’m hugely delighted the High Sheriff commends our recycling initiative in Starbeck. It wouldn’t be possible to run it without the help and support of the local community.

The High Sheriff added:

Chris is a real “Unsung Hero” who has worked tirelessly to turn everyday waste into items to help children and schools. He deserves recognition for his dedication and boundless enthusiasm. I have seen the work he does and the amazing uses he finds for what we discard.

The Cone Exchange is located at East Unit, Hookstone Park, Harrogate and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10am and 4pm, term time only.
