Musical based on “Billy Liar” at Harrogate Theatre

Billy

“Billy”, the musical version of the play Billy Liar will be Ripon Amateur Operatic Society’s next show to be performed at Harrogate Theatre from 18th – 21st April 2012 (including a Saturday matinee).

The show was written by comedy writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais who are more famous for their TV credits including The Likely Lads, Porridge and Auf Wiedersehen Pet. Their comedy talent is reflected in the witty script accompanied by the beautifully written and orchestrated score by the late John Barry.

Set in early 1960s Yorkshire, “Billy” follows a day in the very complicated life of Billy Fisher (who was played by Michael Crawford when the show first opened in the West End). Billy is a dreamer – and a liar. Not content with his life in Yorkshire with his Mum, Dad, and Gran, he believes he is destined for greatness – a film star, a scriptwriter – and anything else glamorous that could occur to him! He even dreams of becoming Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire! However, nobody in his life is impressed by his tales, certainly none of his three girlfriends! Those around him have to suffer the consequences of his fantasies and habitual lying, while Billy lives in a world of daydreams frantically trying to find his way out of the lies he has created.

Billy & Girls

The cast are looking forward to putting on a funny and fast paced show complete with tap dancing, show girls, and fantastic music which has not graced Harrogate Theatre’s stage in over a decade. With its roots in Yorkshire and a strong cast “Billy” promises to entertain and delight its audience.
