Thirteen year old Louis Romer from St John Fisher Catholic High School has been awarded the position of Second Board in Yorkshire -one of the highest chess achievements possible for a boy of his age.

Louis, from Sherburn-in-Elmet, took up the hobby seriously six years ago, when he joined the after-school chess club in York that he still attends. He has participated in several individual and team competitions through the club, has represented York in county competitions and will now join other team members to represent Yorkshire in national competitions.

 Assistant Head, Nigel Beetles said:

This is a fantastic achievement for Louis. We are extremely proud of him. He is a very skilful player with natural aptitude for strategic thinking and is an active and dedicated member of our own lunchtime chess club. St John Fisher aims to support all the extra curricular activities of its students through the provision of a diverse range of clubs. We encourage students of all levels and ages to get together in their free time and explore and progress their interests and talents, whether these are academic, in music and arts or in sports.

Louis is now working towards First Board in Yorkshire, and hoping for success at national competitions. Keep up the good work!
