A mobile phone recycling campaign to help a regional life-saving charity by Harrogate & Knaresborough MP, Andrew Jones, has provided a boost for the organisation.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance relies on local fund-raising to provide the service that can mean the difference between life and death for the patients they transfer in quick time from the scene of an accident to hospital. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance helicopters use the Stray, off Knaresborough Road, to transfer patients into the care of the District Hospital staff. While on the Stray the helicopters attract much attention from passers-by.

The appeal for old mobile phones went out from the MP in January using the local media and Mr Jones’s Facebook page.

Mr Jones commented:

It wasn’t long before all kinds of unused phones were arriving at my office. Some of them were enormous – you forget just how far technology has come in a short time. I’m glad they are going to be put to good use rather than sitting at the bottom of a cupboard or being thrown away.

Mr Jones was thanked by Yorkshire Air Ambulance’s local fundraiser, Tony Doveston, who lives locally in Harrogate.

Collecting the phones from Mr Jones, Mr Doveston added:

To keep providing its life saving service we need to raise £7200 every day. The generosity that we receive is the life blood of the charity and without this generosity, we would not be able to provide this vital service of which we are so proud to the people of Yorkshire.
