North Yorkshire boost for Nidderdale social enterprise project

17 January 2012

PaperworksPeople living in rural parts of Nidderdale will benefit from a £41,000 grant from North Yorkshire County Council to the Harrogate-based social enterprise, Paperworks.

The money – from the county council’s Innovation Fund – will be used to launch a new outreach service through the appointment of an additional development officer.

Paperworks provides work experience and skills training for people with learning disabilities and other health related barriers to work, to help them towards permanent employment. It also provides business support services including direct mailing and printing to companies in the area, and last year became the first social enterprise in North Yorkshire to be awarded the Social Enterprise Mark.

County Councillor Clare Wood, Executive Member for Adult Social Care:

The voluntary sector plays a vital part in the provision of care to people across our county, and the award of these grants is a demonstration that the council is determined to recognise and reward that contribution.

A disability should not be a barrier to people’s aspirations to work. Paperwork is an excellent example of how this is translated in practice and I am glad we can support their expansion to another area of North Yorkshire.

Damien Handslip, the project manager at Paperwork, said:

This will not only make Paperworks more accessible to more people, it will also increase the quality of support, thereby  helping them to regain independence and employment.

The expansion aims to provide a long term solution to the current need for training provision in rural North Yorkshire.
