Harrogate’s recycling pirate welcomes MP’s first-class charity gift

21 December 2011

At this time of year the Royal Mail is rushed off its feet getting cards and presents to people. But after we’ve opened all the cards few of us realise just how useful the used stamps can be. Many organisations and charities collect used stamps which can then be sold on to raise much needed funds.

Local MP, Andrew Jones has been collecting stamps from his office correspondence all through 2011 and handed them over to local recycling celebrity Captain Rummage (pictured with Andrew Jones MP and a treasure chest of stamps) at the Cone Exchange in Starbeck.

As well as manning the Cone Exchange – a community recycling project – with his team of volunteers, Captain Rummage dons his pirate gear to go out to schools and get children excited about ‘turning trash into treasure’.

Andrew commented:

Collecting stamps is such an easy way to help charities and yet relatively few people do it. I want everyone to make it their New Year’s resolution to start collecting their used stamps to help our local charities.

Mr Jones has asked his Harrogate-based office team to act as a central collection point for used stamps which can then be bulked and passed on to charities.

Mr Jones continued:

My team are aiming to collect more stamps in 2012 even than they did in 2011.

Anyone wanting to contribute can post their stamps to my office or drop them in personally.

Mr Jones’s constituency office is at 57 East Parade, Harrogate, HG1 5LQ.

Captain Rummage commented: “I was delighted to receive so many stamps from our local MP. With donations like this much can be done for charities like OXFAM. I am so pleased that Andrew has agreed to continue collecting in 2012 and hope many others will support by collecting their used stamps too.”
