Local swimming stars to start 2012 by making a big splash for Marie Curie Cancer Care and Sport Relief

19 December 2011

On Thursday 5 January 2012, Leeds-based Commonwealth Games finalist Anne Bochmann, and Harrogate’s Pride of Britain winner and swimmer Danielle Bailey and GB Senior Ironman Bill Hitchcock, will join swimmers at The Hydro Swimming Pool in Harrogate to mark the launch of the world’s biggest fundraising swim, the Swimathon Weekend.

Now in its 25th year, Swimathon has joined forces with British Swimming’s and the BBC’s Big Splash, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Sport Relief to hold the world’s biggest fundraising swim.

Participants can swim the Big Splash Mile for Sport Relief or the 2.5k and 5k distance challenges for Marie Curie Cancer Care. The Swimathon is taking place in 645 pools throughout the UK from the 27 to 29 April.

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will inspire the nation, so there is no better way for the region to kick off the year with the young and old, beginners and champions together in the pool taking part in a special training session.

Swimmers can register to take part in a Swimathon Weekend challenge at swimathon.org
