1 September 2011

Morphets, the Harrogate Auctioneers, are to offer a major collection of Modern British Art including works by LS Lowry (1887-1976) in their Autumn Fine Art Catalogue Sale to be held on 8th September.

Man with a cart guide price £50,000-£70,000

The paintings, the property of a Harrogate family, have not been seen on the market for around forty years since they were purchased at The Lefevre Gallery, London, in the 1970s. Included in the collection are three oil paintings and a pencil drawing by Lowry, and two oil paintings by the Northern artist Helen Bradley (1900-1979).

The late Harrogate residents were astute collectors, not only acquiring works by various leading Modern British artists but also by the French artists Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) and Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955), all of which were purchased from leading London galleries in the 1970s.

Morphets previously sold a collection of seven monochrome works by Louis Wain for the family in September 2007.

A number of works by Brian Shields (1955-1997), otherwise known as ‘braaq’, and other northern artists will also be offered on behalf of private clients.

The sale will also include 20th century furniture and design and a wide range of period furniture and antiques, silver, jewellery, books and collectors’ items.
