York police are warning the public to be vigilant after card-reading device was found on a cash machine in Bishopthorpe.

The device, which was found on an ATM at the Co-op on Main Street, was designed to trap bank cards and film PIN numbers being inputted into the machine.

Police believe that the recording equipment was set up sometime between Saturday 13 and Wednesday 17 August 2011.

Officers investigating the incident are urging people to be on their guard when using cash machines and to report anything suspicious to the police.

PC Adam Fenwick, of Safer Neighbourhood Team, said:

I would like to remind residents and visitors to York to be extra vigilant when using ATMs in the area.

Check the machine you are using around the card slot and above the keypad as this is where the recording equipment is usually placed.

If you see anything unusual or suspicious report it to the police or Crimestoppers as soon as possible.
