Cyclist wins bike for charity ride

17 August 2011

Helen Morgan, who took part in the Acorn 100k Charity Bike Ride in May has won a new cycle for raising the largest amount of money for the charity. The Trek hybrid bike was generously donated by Chevin Cycles of Otley.

Helen raised £722 for the two charities which Acorn supports – research into scleroderma at Leeds General Infirmary and for people with dementia and their carers in the Ripon and Harrogate area. She cycled the 100k route with the Aldwark Spinners team who raised £2,739 in total and were trained by Richard Bellerby.

The Aldwark Spinners also held a charity coffee morning at their local gym raising another £137. This was Helen’s first major bike ride and she is now planning to do the Great Yorkshire Bike Ride as well next year. Her motivation came from her father-in-law who has dementia, and her husband who has not tried cycling before is training to do the Acorn Bike Ride with her next year.

Louise Hanen, chairman of Acorn, said,

I am thrilled to present this cycle to Helen for her tremendous effort in raising so much money for Acorn. The support of individuals like Helen and her family enable us to make a difference in the local community.
