Hotel du Vin wins carbon saver gold standard award

5 August 2011

Harrogate’s Hotel du Vin is celebrating after being awarded the prestigious Carbon Saver Gold Standard for successfully reducing its carbon emissions over a three year period.

The Government’s CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme aims to improve energy efficiency and cutting emissions in large public and private sector organisations. These are responsible for around 10% of the UK’s total emissions.

To achieve the award, the hotel had to demonstrate not only year-on-year energy reductions, but also robust ongoing sustainability processes and energy management strategies to promote better understanding of energy usage.

Grant Lowe, general manager Hotel du Vin, Harrogate said: “We are absolutely delighted to be one of the few hotels in the UK to win this award which publicly recognises how seriously the Hotel du Vin group takes its environmental responsibilities.”

Four other hotels in the group – in Birmingham, Brighton, Cheltenham and Henley – also successfully met the stringent energy criteria, with work being carried out at the remaining properties to bring them in line. Hotels at sister group Malmaison were also awarded.

Energy reductions were made through:

  • Energy saving bulbs
  • Light sensors in low traffic areas
  • TV turned off and not left on Standby
  • Well maintained equipment ie: Boilers etc so that they run efficiently.
  • Staff all aware and following best practice – not wasting water or gas needlessly.
  • Sustainability & carbon foot print
  • Using local food suppliers
  • Sustainable fishing stocks
