Electrical Faults and Related Disruption, Church Road, Liversedge

24 July 2011

Emergency services were called to a nursing home on Church Road, Liversedge at just after 8am this morning (23 July 2011) following a report of a fire.

On attending it was discovered that an electrical fault had caused damage to electrical appliances in the building and also in nearby homes.

This caused burn outs of certain electrical appliances and some small fires although no serious damage. There is not believed to have been a fire in the nursing home itself.

Police can confirm no-one was injured in the incident and residents were evacuated from the nursing home as a precaution.

Engineers from YEDL have been checking nearby homes and are also working to fix electrical faults and restore power supplies which were turned off while the damage was located. It is expected power will be restored this evening.

Meanwhile, Police are currently linking the electrical faults to the alleged theft of copper cable overnight from a nearby electricity substation.

Two men from the local area, aged 34 and 46 were arrested this morning on suspicion of metal theft in connection with the incident, and are currently in Police custody for questioning.

Enquiries remain ongoing into the incident this evening by Huddersfield CID and officers from the Spen Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team are also currently conducting reassurance patrols.
