Young people invited to enter Crimebeat 2011 Awards

18 July 2011

The High Sherriff for North Yorkshire, Mrs Alexandra Holford, is inviting young people to enter the North Yorkshire Crimebeat 2011 awards.

The competition is open to anyone aged between 10 and 18, living in North Yorkshire and the City of York.

Entries are welcomed from individuals or teams from schools, youth clubs and community groups.

The closing date for entries is Friday 4 November 2011.

The teams will present their projects to the judging panel in February 2012. Although the projects do not have to be completed by this stage, they must have reached a point that will allow their effectiveness to be evaluated.

North Yorkshire Crimebeat is funded by the High Sheriff of North Yorkshire’s Fund, providing grants and awards to recognise community safety projects.

In 2010, a total of £1,750 was awarded in prize money and a further £300 allocated as additional supporting funds for other projects.

As Crimebeat is about young people making a positive contribution, the majority of planning and delivery should be done by the young people involved. However, a degree of adult guidance is acceptable.

The High Sherriff for North Yorkshire, Mrs Alexandra Holford, said: “I am delighted that I am able to work with North Yorkshire Police to involve young people in projects that benefit the whole of the community, improving life for us all.

“The initiative and commitment of the young people is wonderful.

“I am very much looking forward to meeting young people and discover the spark of inspiration behind the project.”

Chief Constable Grahame Maxwell said: “I am very pleased that North Yorkshire Police has the opportunity to support such a worthwhile competition as the Crimebeat Awards.

“The young people involved show great initiative and dedication to crime prevention and other aspects of community safety within their communities, which is fantastic to see.

“I am keen to see this year’s entries. I am positive that they will continue to be of the high quality that we have seen previously.”
