Police officer bitten during Harrogate burglary arrest

A suspected burglar who allegedly bit a police officer was arrested in Harrogate last night (Wednesday 25 May) after a brave householder chased him from his home.

At around 10.30pm, the residents of a house in the Bilton area of Harrogate were disturbed by an intruder in their home.

The householder chased the man from the house and he fled in the direction of St John’s Church.

Officers arrived on the scene minutes later and carried out a search of the area on foot. They found the suspect hiding under a car and arrested him.

A police officer suffered a bite injury to his arm during the arrest and was treated at Harrogate District Hospital before returning to duty.

A 24-year-old man from the Harrogate area was arrested on suspicion on burglary and assault. He remains in police custody.

Officers praised the actions of the householders who rang the police immediately, giving a detailed description of the suspect which led to his swift arrest.
