Fatal collision near Kirby Fleetham – witness appeal

Police are appealing for information following a fatal road traffic collision on the A1.

It occurred just after 12.30pm on Saturday 21 May 2011 at the Kirby Fleetham junction and involved a green Ford Fiesta and red Rover 25.

At the time of the collision the Fiesta was crossing the A1 heading towards Kirby Fleetham and the Rover was travelling south on the A1.

The driver of the Rover, a 39-year-old Hartlepool man, was taken of the Darlington Memorial Hospital with serious but non life threatening injuries to his chest, where he currently remains.

The 87-year-old man, from the Bedale area, driving the Fiesta, was taken to the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton where he remains in a stable condition. His 85-year-old wife was taken by air ambulance to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

We will not be in a position to release her identity until later this week.

Traffic Sergeant Clare Sawyer, of the force’s Roads Policing Group, said: “I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or the manner of driving of either vehicle prior to the incident to come forward as I need to speak to them.”
