Police release identity of the man who died after a collision with two cars near Spofforth

Police are now able to release the identity of the man who died after his motorcycle was in collision with two cars near Spofforth on Tuesday afternoon (19 April).

He is Philip Rodgers, aged 57 from Cowthorpe near Wetherby.

Officers investigating the collision have renewed their appeal for witnesses. In particular, motorists who were in the area prior to the crash.

Sergeant Ian Pope of Harrogate Roads Policing Unit has made a direct appeal to motorists in the area, he said: “This was a serious incident with a tragic loss of life and we need anyone who was in the vicinity of the collision at the time – on the A661 between Harrogate and Spofforth – to come forward and give us any information they may have, no matter how small or insignificant you may think it is.

“We know that there were other vehicles in the vicinity of the collision and those drivers may hold vital information which could assist our investigation.

“We urge those motorists to come forward and contact us.”

The collision occurred on the on the A661 between Harrogate and Spofforth near the North Deighton junction at around 3.30pm on Tuesday 19 April.

It involved Mr Rodgers’ black Kawasaki motorcycle, a black Ford Ka and a black Vauxhall Corsa.

Mr Rodgers was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with serious injuries, where he sadly died.

The driver of the Ford Ka sustained minor injuries and the driver of the Corsa was uninjured.

Mr Rodgers was travelling towards Harrogate and the two cars were travelling in the opposite direction.

The road was closed to allow collision investigators to examine the scene, it was reopened at around 6.30pm.
