Knaresborough Poet has collection of own work published

29 March 2011

A Knaresborough man’s collection of poems – in which the historic market town and its attractions – feature prominently – has been published.

The book, Collected Poems, has been written by Darren Jones, of Aspin Lane, and covers his work, which started in the early 1980s, right through to ones penned last year.

The one-time rock band manager, dance music promoter and music festival organizer’s love of poetry began while studying business at Harrogate College of Further Education.

The 50-year-old married father of one, who works for hygiene company, takes much of his inspiration from the landscapes of Knaresborough, writing about famous landmarks including the Castle, Petrifying Well, St Robert’s Cave and former Zoo.

One focuses on the pigeons that flock around the Market Square and statue of Blind Jack, whilst another is centered around Abbey Orchard on Abbey Road.

Darren said: “My love of poetry began whilst I was at College. I would often go to the library and pick up poetry books.

“Reading poems inspired me to try my hand at writing my own. I had two books published in 1984 and 1986, and these sold well around the college.

“I love poetry and I write when inspiration comes to me. The collection of almost 100 poems is what I would describe as eclectic – a mixture of the serious and the bizarre!

“I hope my work can win a new audience and it may even go on to inspire a new generation of authors to take up the writing, just like I did back in the day!”

Darren’s book, which for sale at a cost of £7.99, is available to buy on Amazon, WH Smiths and Waterstones online, as well as being available at the Castlegate Bookshop in Knaresborough.
