A Harrogate retail outlet is making sure all its ducks “are in a row”, as it prepares for a fund-raising event in aid of the town’s Saint Michael’s Hospice.

On the afternoon of Sunday, April 17, staff at the Darley Mill Centre will launch 1,000 yellow, plastic ducks into the adjacent stream, which flows through its grounds, for its second annual charity duck race.

Darley Mill Centre owner Ross Leventhal said: “Last year, we staged the race with just 500 ducks. This year, we are doubling the number so more people can participate.

“We have brought the date of the event forward to April 17, as we are hoping the stream will be in full flow then – which will result in a really exciting race for the spectators to watch.”

Chief Executive of Saint Michael’s, Tony Collins, said: “Fundraising comes in all shapes and sizes, from midnight walks and dinners to running marathons and holding jumble sales, and we are very much looking forward to the Darley Mill Centre Duck Race.

“We are extremely grateful to Ross and The Darley Mill Centre team for all the support they shown us since taking it over in 2009. Their support will enable us to continue to respond to the increasing numbers of local people requesting our help.”

The ducks, which cost £1 and are individually numbered, are available to buy in advance or on the day, from the Darley Mill Centre. First prize is £150, second £50 and third £25. All proceeds will go to Saint Michael’s Hospice. The race starts at 3pm.

Last year’s Darley Mill Centre Duck Race raised in excess of £500 for Focus on Darley.
