Witnesses sought to Harrogate collision

7 March 2011

Traffic police are appealing for witnesses following a road traffic collision in Harrogate.

The incident occurred at around 7.30am on Friday 4 March 2011 on the A658 between Pannal and the Kestrel roundabout.

A silver Vauxhall Meriva was travelling uphill towards Pannal, followed by a black Renault Clio, when both vehicles were overtaken by a white van, possibly a Citroen Berlingo.

As the van overtook, the driver was forced to pull in to avoid a head-on collision with a blue and white articulated lorry travelling in the opposite direction. As the van pulled in, it hit the front offside wheel arch of the Vauxhall Meriva and disloged the front bumper.

The driver of the Meriva, an 86-year-old man, was uninjured in the incident but was very shaken and was taken to Harrogate District Hospital for a check-up.

The driver of the van failed to stop at the scene of the incident and police are appealing for the public’s help to trace the vehicle.

Traffic Constable Andy Macleod, of Harrogate Road Policing Group, said: “Fortunately, nobody was seriously injured in the collision, which could have been much worse.

“I am appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or the driver of the white can to come forward.”

Anyone with any information that can help the police with their enquiries is urged to contact TC Andy Macleod, of Harrogate Road Policing Group on 0845 60 60 24 7.
