Past and present face to face at Henshaws portrait exhibition

3 March 2011

An innovative and exciting portrait exhibition has been launched at Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre in Knaresborough. Displayed in the centre’s Café Gallery, the exhibition combines portraits by Henshaws art makers alongside historical masterpieces from the Harrogate Fine Art Collection.

The talented art makers created their masterpieces at Harrogate’s Mercer Gallery during a ‘Face to Face’ exhibition. They then put their creative and curating skills to the test, choosing key pieces from the town’s outstanding portrait collection to hang alongside their own work.

As well as admiring the artwork, visitors to the exhibition can also enjoy a snack in the Centre’s café. All food is prepared by art makers from the centre and students from Henshaws college, using locally sourced ingredients and produce grown at the centre and at the college.

HenshawsCentre Manager, Phill Hopkins said: “Our art makers had a brilliant time creating their work and it’s a privilege to showcase their talents in the gallery. The exhibition really shows how great artists from history inspire the great artists of today, and we hope it will be enjoyed by many.”

Henshaws provides a range of educational, residential, day-care and community services for visually-impaired and disabled people of all ages. Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre also operates production units for its 120-plus art makers, which include papermaking, woodworking, pottery, jewellery, horticulture and bag-making.

The Arts & Crafts Centre and café in Knaresborough are open to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday. The Artists/Curators exhibition can be enjoyed for free at the Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre, Knaresborough until 9th April.
