Conservation area character appraisals

22 February 2011

This is the last year of a four year review of the 52 Conservation Areas in the Harrogate district.

The council has adopted Conservation Area Appraisals for 37 of these special areas and is now consulting on draft appraisals for the following:

Baldersby St James

Coneythorpe

Healey

Middlesmoor

Studley Roger

Wath (Ripon)

Weston

The appraisals define the key elements of the special character of the district’s towns and villages and will provide guidance for their positive management.

The draft documents have been prepared with the help of local residents, who attended workshops held in each of the Conservation Areas. Once approved, the appraisal documents will form an ‘evidence base’ for the Harrogate District Local Development Framework and will also form part of a district-wide management strategy.

These draft appraisals and the approved appraisal documents can be seen on the council’s website www.harrogate.gov.uk/conservation

Copies can also be seen at the council’s offices in Harrogate, Knaresborough and Ripon.

The council would like your comments – forms are available at Council Offices and Libraries, or you can respond by e-mail on a form that can be downloaded from the council’s website. Alternative let us know your views by letter to Ann Johnson, Principal Conservation Design Officer at Harrogate Borough Council, Forward Planning, Department of Development Services, Knapping Mount, West Grove Road, Harrogate HG1 2AE. The closing date is 28 March 2011.

Following this six week consultation, amendments will be made in response to the comments received and the council will approve the final version as evidence for the Local Development Framework and for development control purposes.
