Suspect package in York – Aviva evacuate staff and bomb disposal attend

Update 10.15am: Just to clarify, the package found at Aviva PLC this morning did not pose a danger to the public and North Yorkshire Police are working with Aviva to establish the origins of the package. Police understand that a lot of disruption was caused in the city this morning, however officers responded to a call made in good faith and we have a duty to take every precaution in circumstances such as these.

Suspect package found in York North Yorkshire Police are currently at the scene of an incident in York city centre.

At approximately 7.20am today (Wednesday 9 February 2011) a suspicious package was found in the post room of Aviva PLC on Rougier Street.

A cordon was put in place around the building and members of staff were evacuated to the nearby war memorial. No surrounding buildings are required to evacuate, however occupants of nearby buildings are advised to stay inside at this time.

Army bomb disposal experts arrived at the scene at around 8.50am and are currently examining the package.

Rougier Street and Station Road are currently closed to traffic and pedestrians, however buses are being allowed through the cordon. The police actions are a precautionary measure and residents and visitors to York are advised that the situation is under control.
