Deputy Chief Constable Adam Briggs to retire

2 February 2011

North Yorkshire Police Authority has confirmed that Deputy Chief Constable Adam Briggs has requested to retire on 6 February 2011.

NYPA has agreed to that request.

Jane Kenyon, Chairman of the Authority, said “Adam Briggs has been a fine Police Officer during his 31 years’ service.

His contribution has been respected and valued by the communities he has served in Cleveland, West and North Yorkshire”. ‘We wish Adam well in his retirement’.

Mr Briggs joined North Yorkshire Police in June 2007 and over the last three years the Force has enjoyed a significant reduction in crime, people killed and seriously injured on the roads and anti-social behaviour.

DCC Briggs said: “I am fortunate to have enjoyed a great career with the Police Service and I wish to express my respect to the men and women whom I have so enjoyed serving with. They work hard every day, both Police Officers and Police Staff serving our communities with distinction. They deliver an excellent service, whatever the weather, the challenges and threats they face. I am proud to have served with them”.

Mr Briggs had been the subject of a number of inquiries in the last year, one of which upheld two counts of misconduct over allegations that he tried to unfairly help a relative during recruitment.

A further investigation was also recently launched into his spending of £10,000 on executive coaching with a personal trainer. Briggs responded by questioning why “valuable time and resource” had been spent on the inquiry. The authority firmly defended its position to ensure senior officers are held to account when appropriate.
