Dive in and have your say on the swimming sessions available in the district

22 September 2017

Harrogate Borough Council is calling on local residents to give their views on the types of sessions which are available in its swimming pools, so they can help influence the range of activities and classes that are provided in the future.

The council is keen to improve swimming provision across the district and a twelve week public consultation, which is now open, will be used to gauge public opinion.

Harrogate Borough Council runs five swimming pools in the district – the Harrogate Hydro, Ripon Spa Baths, Knaresborough Pool, Nidderdale Pool and Starbeck Baths. Each pool has its own programme of activity which includes swimming lessons, family fun sessions, general swimming sessions, early riser sessions, aqua babes and a range of fitness classes such as Aqua Core and Aqua Fit.

The council is seeking to understand the reasons why residents swim in its pools, which sessions they currently attend and what activities they would like to see in the future.

The authority is also keen to hear from those people who do not currently use the pools to understand why they do not go swimming and if there are any activities that they would be interested in attending.

Councillor Stanley Lumley, Harrogate Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Sport said: “We currently offer a wide variety of classes and activities within our swimming pools and people use them for a variety of reasons – to keep fit, to feel part of the community or to simply have fun.

“We want to ensure that our current programme of activity is right for our customers and this public consultation will help us to understand how people currently use our swimming pools, whether they are happy with the classes on offer and if there are any activities that they would like us to add to our programme. We are also keen to hear from people who do not currently use our pools so that we can look at creating a programme which appeals to them.

“We are committed to delivering excellent customer service for our community and by working together we can create a swimming programme that offers something for everyone.”

The public consultation runs until Friday 8 December 2017 and is available to complete at www.harPHILrogate.gov.uk/haveyoursay

Paper copies of the consultation are also available from The Harrogate Hydro, Ripon Spa Baths, Knaresborough Pool, Nidderdale Pool, Starbeck Baths, Ripon Leisure Centre and the council’s Crescent Gardens offices in Harrogate.
