Harrogate Town continued their run of good form in pre season friendlies with a 1-0 win at a baking hot Garforth.
In a match that started in a reportedly 27C temperature, Harrogate started the stronger, with trialist Joel Purkiss hitting the crossbar after latching on to a Chib Chilaka cross.
Luke Shiels pushed forward to head a corner from Andi Thanoj over the top as Town turned the screw and Purkiss in particular was subjected to some heavy tackles as Garforth sought to stem the tide.
Louis Swain broke through on the left but his shot was blocked by the legs of home keeper, Paul Hagreen.
It took almost half an hour for Garforth to threaten Town’s goal when Joe Colbeck lost a tussle on the left to Russell Headly who cut inside and set up Mark Simpson, only for Town’s debutant keeper, Joe Green to turn Simpson’s rising drive over the bar.
The only goal of the game arrived after 38 minutes when Andy Gascoigne’s powerful run was halted in the area by the home defence, only for the ball to run to Chilaka, who shot past Hagreen.
Harrogate had further chances to stretch their lead before the break with Gascoigne heading over from a Thanoj corner
and Warren Burrell and Chilaka combining to create a chance for Thanoj, whose clever lob was inches too high.
The same pattern continued after the break and Burrell was unlucky not to make it two when his header came back off the upright.
Chilaka was next to spurn a scoring opportunity when he headed an excellent deep cross from Colbeck wide of the post.
The usual multitude of changes were made in the second half, with Platt, Ainge, Crook, Robertson, Thirlwell and Knowles, all being given a run out.
Dom Knowles almost got himself on to the scoresheet when his 25 yard free kick sailed narrowly wide and a well struck volley from Burrell struck the underside of the crossbar.
The last action saw Platt inadvertently almost divert Paul Thirlwell’s shot past Hagreen, only for the keeper to grab the ball at the second attempt.
