Orthodontist celebrates 10th birthday

6 May 2016

Award-winning orthodontist Megan Hatfield is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the launch of her business Wetherby Orthodontics this month.

She qualified as a dentist at Leeds University and worked in hospitals for several years carrying out oral surgery and orthodontics and teaching students.

Growing number of adult patients

Megan has seen the number of adults seeking brace treatment steadily rise over the past decade and she now treats a growing number of patients over the age of 40.

Megan said:

Often they’re from a lost generation that never had access to orthodontic care as children, unlike today’s youngsters who are encouraged to have the treatment while they’re still at school.

There’s a perception that braces are something teenagers wear so when older patients come in wanting to correct irregularities in the alignment of their teeth they’re reluctant to have traditional braces but thankfully, with the development of lingual braces – which are fitted to the backs of the teeth rather than the front – treatment can be very discreet.

Job satisfaction

One of the things Megan loves most about her job is the reaction she gets from patients when they complete their treatment.

Megan said:

Adults in particular are very reluctant to take the first step and it’s incredibly satisfying to see the impact treatment can make on their self-confidence.

Some people seek treatment direct and others are referred by a dentist for an assessment. The assessment will involve taking x-rays and dental photographs before planning treatment and agreeing a plan with patient, or parent in the case of a child.

Megan explains:

As a specialist it’s important to liaise with the local general dentists, and sometimes we have to work quite closely on co-ordinating care for a patient, so it’s important to have good working relationships.

Highlights

Megan says some of the highlights of her career have been winning the JK Williams gold medal from the Royal College of Surgeons, being named aesthetic dentist of the year in 2014 and winning the orthodontic categories for treated cases at the Aesthetic Dentistry Awards.
