A charity night featuring Yorkshire County Cricket Club coach Jason Gillespie and cricket commentator Dave Callaghan will take place at Bilton Cricket Club, Harrogate, on Thursday, 28 April 2016, starting at 7.30pm.
The event has been organised by Club President Jane Blackburn, whose brother passed away from skin cancer last year.
The ‘Yorkshire v Cancer’ evening will raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research, which is working with Yorkshire County Cricket Club, the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation and the Yorkshire Cricket Board to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of skin cancer and highlight the dangers of the sun.
Gillespie and Callaghan will host a raffle and auction to raise money for the charity’s Sun Awareness campaign, and both will be on hand for a Q&A session. Auction items donated by local businesses include a round of golf for four people, signed Leeds Rhinos shirts, a signed Yorkshire County Cricket Club bat, a signed Alistair Cook shirt and tickets to a Yorkshire T20 game.
The evening is free to attend. Raffle tickets can be purchased for £1 on the night or in advance from the clubhouse bar. Jane’s employer William Hill has promised to match up to £500 raised during the event.
Sophie Bunker, Community Engagement at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said:
We are very grateful to Bilton Cricket Club for holding this event and wish it every success on the night. The number of people diagnosed with skin cancer in Yorkshire is increasing at an alarming rate and we hope events like this will help to raise awareness of the disease and the precautionary measures you can take to keep yourself safe in the sun.
