Fundraisers mark the Queen’s 90th birthday by turning the streets of Harrogate red, white and blue – and chocolate!

Volunteers supporting the Carers’ Resource charity, based at North Park Road, are celebrating the Royal milestone by staging a “hen party” with a difference.

Each year, they team up with Cadbury to knit woolly Easter chick covers for the chocolate giant’s famed creme eggs.

The chic chicks are then sold across Yorkshire for a donation of £1.50 towards the charity’s work supporting the growing number of people in the county caring for a loved one.

More than 1,000 covers have already been created this year –  including a limited edition in the red, white and blue of the Union Jack to commemorate Her Majesty’s birthday.

Anne from Carers Resource said:

We choose a different theme each Easter to add a different and eye-catching dimension to the chicks,” said Anne Wells, Events and FundraisingCoordinator at the Carers’ Resource.

We have had covers styled on Sir Bradley Wiggins in the past when the Tour de France came to Yorkshire, and on Bradford City footballers to mark the historic occasion they reached Wembley.

This Easter, the focus of our volunteers’ imagination – and knitting sticks – has been the Queen’s 90th birthday that we will be joining the whole country in celebrating in May.

It has been another tremendous effort by  our team of volunteers – even if they have had to source more red, white and blue wool than usual!

Since the first chick cover was knitted eight years ago, more than 10,000 have been sold across Yorkshire – generating over £15,000 for the charity.

Anne Wells added:

We are delighted to be able to draw upon the generosity of Cadbury, who have backed this initiative every year since day one, and take an active interest in the work that we are able to do as a result.

The chicks are not just a great Easter present – they also play an important role in raising awareness of the vital work we do in helping unpaid carers from all walks of life and of all ages overcome the day-to-day pressures that their role brings.

The covers are available from a range of outlets – from schools to cafes to Rotary Clubs – across the charity’s Yorkshire patch, as well as at its offices in North Park Road, Harrogate; Allhallowgate, Ripon; Parkview Court, Shipley; and Broughton Hall business park, Skipton.
