Law firm support disabled riders group in Follifoot

14 July 2014

A group of solicitors from Leeds law firm Irwin Mitchell showed their support to a Yorkshire disabled riders group by volunteering at a Gymkhana which saw dozens of young people enjoy some equestrian fun in the sun.

The Gymkhana took place on Friday 27 June 2014 at Follifoot Park in Harrogate and over 60 people, including children being cared for by local hospitals and from local schools came to join in the fun throughout the day.

The Follifoot Park Disabled Riders Group was originally formed in 1986 and became an independent charity in 1994.

Julie Pedley, the owner of Follifoot Park Riding Centre and the founding Chairman, Rosie Towers, wanted to be able to offer disabled riders the unique benefits of horse riding.

Katie Warner, a medical law expert from Irwin Mitchell’s Leeds office who coordinated the firm’s attendance at the event said: Through our work we see just how important and beneficial groups such as the Follifoot Park Disabled Riders Group are to people who suffer from disabilities.

They offer them a chance to explore new experiences and opportunities and help them gain a sense of independence through taking part in activities.
We were delighted to be able to support the event and help out on the day.

Seeing how much the riders enjoyed the Gymkhana was fantastic and we look forward to working with, and supporting, the charity at future events.

The charity now has 150 volunteers who help to provide 17 regular rides each week in groups of up to seven disabled people.

During the past 25 years, hundreds of riders have enjoyed taking part.

The charity aim to be able to provide more opportunities for disabled people to enjoy the unique benefits and pleasures of riding and carriage driving.

Wendy Thornburn, from the Follifoot Park Disabled Riders Group, said: We are very grateful for the support of Irwin Mitchell solicitors on our Gymkhana day.

We have approximately 60 riders on this day and each one goes home with a rosette, medal, certificate and photograph.

The staff of Irwin Mitchell were responsible for printing the photographs and certificates and supplied us with a professional photographer who took spectacular shots.
The joy on the face of the riders when they were given a photograph of themselves on their horse was a joy to behold.
