Dirty Stops Out – weekending May the 4th Be With You

1 May 2014

Dj Trev’s weekly guide to how to keep writing this page when you really don’t have time this week.

This week I really don’t have time to write this page. Even this bit so far has taken me too long. I’m a very busy man and have to come up with at least 2 vaguely amusing facebook statuses today, and not only that, write a quiz for my quiz night that no one goes to. So FORGIIIIIIIIVE MEEEE if I just copy and past a paragraph I got sent to me on Facebook recently. This is from Kyle who is doing some charity thing, I’ve skimmed through it, and there seems to be little or no offensive language, so here it is: “Hi everyone. Here’s the down-low on what we are trying to achieve. For as little money as possible we are attempting a 1500 + mile trip from Blackpool to Benidorm in a £250 old banger. Along the way, we will have to complete a series of challenges. This is all in the name of a charity we have chosen which is St Michael s Hospice. We will be dressing up as Mario characters and transforming our car into a Mario Kart. Any support or donations you can give us would be extremely appreciated. You can text BUST48 £2 (or any other amount) to 70070 to help our cause! Follow our facebook page for the latest team news @ facebook.com/teamstarpower”. Cheers Kyle, I’ve looked into this and it seems legit, and Kyle is a nice young man so will cheerfully give it a thumbs up. Unfortunately I can’t work out how to do that thing that people do on facebook where they send you an image of a “thumbs up”. So I’ll give you a smiley face instead J
As well as Kyle, other people who want to take advantage of my friendship (although in a less altruistic fashion) include your Dj Pieman. He insisted I tell you the following: He is moving to Hamerica shortly, and this Saturday is the “Last Ever” Stereotype. This is a night he’s been running successfully on the top floor at Rehab for about 4 years. Now, I personally suspect / know for an outright fact that Mark isn’t moving away on Monday, so he will probably be back doing another Saturday before he goes, but I think he thinks he is Megadeth and can do as many “Last ever” gigs as he likes. It’s kind of milking it. But since I myself have been milking a vague ability to play songs without much gap in between for 19 years, I feel that Mark can legitimately drag out the fact that he is moving to America as long as he can, and you should go and say bye to him at some point. So don’t forget, this Saturday, Dj Pieman’s leaving do on the top floor at Rehab. Don’t miss it. It’s his LAST EVER night in Harrogate.
Onto this coming Monday Dj Pieman presents his quiz at The Alexandra. I went last week and it was really busy. This week there is a guaranteed cash jackpot of £100. I’m not really sure how he manages to afford to do that. My quiz tonight normally has a guaranteed cash jackpot of about 12 quid. Maybe this is why Mark is moving to America, has he stolen all the gold?
Right, it’s another bank holiday this weekend, so lots of gigs on that would not normally be… here, in no particular order, indeed put in a totally random order and not giving precedent to anyone in particular, are the special one of gigs:
Sunday: BOTTOM OF THE BOTTLE’ MAY THE 4TH BE WITH YOU Party, featuring PIPS, Hell fire Jack, Black Anvils and The Shades. Local try hard Dj Trev is hosting another one of his nights of loud music and sexy rock people. Entry is free, and Dj Trev Dj Trev Dj Trev.
Also on Sunday there is also a Charity gig on at the Alexandra. Now, to be fair, I feel pretty bad listing my night above a charity gig. I mean, not bad enough to change the order of the listing, but still… Dragon Fly Tattoo and Beyond Reproach are playing there, and it is in aid of the Leigh Naylor fund. On the event page it says there are 3 bands playing but I can’t find out what the 3rd band is. Go to the website and check it out yourself, or better yet, go and donate some money. I’ve just donated a fiver, and if everyone who reads this page and enjoys this page did the same they could raise as much as five pounds.
Come on, that was worth a fiver. http://leighnaylor.co.uk/
Friday: Montey have a couple of Bank Holidays gigs. On Friday they welcome The UK Foo Fighters, whilst on Sunday they have Idlefish. I can’t think of anything to say about that really, but I like Montey’s so I’ll give them a J too. I don’t want to go nuts with giving smiles though, as J will lose their value if I do too many of them.
In the world of house Music, also on Friday night there are two big nights on: Knee Deep run Deep House nights once a month at Moko Lounge, this month with a residents special. As someone who has held down more than my fair share of residencies in my time, I have to give props to resident Dj’s as they are the ones who put in the graft whilst superstar dj’s just get all the money. And women. So go to this night and give the residents some money. Or women. Or both. Also on Friday Lure Bar has a “13 Records” Showcase night which looks good. There is a door charge for both these events but they are very low compared to how much these kind of nights cost in, say Leeds, so I suspect a great deal of the house crowd will be going to both these nights, as well they should. Lots of people lots of the time say there should be more house nights in town, well, there are two on Friday, GO TO THEM! And hey – on Sunday Discotek are having another all dayer at Retro Bar. That really is a lot of house music. Stop complaining and go out and dance.
The Den has got Citizen Smith on this Friday, whilst The Regency Pub’s live music night has shifted to Saturdays now, which makes me presume it’s going pretty well. Faried is in charge and he’s a music person’s musician. Obviously it should by now go without saying that the Blues Bar has live music on constantly, and once again I find myself thinking you are almost spoiled for choice this weekend. If you don’t go out at some point you suck and I don’t want to be friends with you.
Broader Community Watch:
I want to list fixtures for our local football teams, but unfortunately following a 5 minute cursory google search, I can’t find any. I can find their websites, but I can’t find out when they are playing. Maybe you could find out for me, and go if you like football, but think it was me who told you about it? Yes? That would be great. Henshaws have an arts and craft’s fair there this Sunday, that’s the only actual community thing I’ve found out about this week. So I’m going to put The Curzon Theatre’s Movie Quiz night, which is run by the clever “Geek Pub Quiz” people, this Thursday, in this section, as otherwise it all looks a bit sparse.
The Harrogate Noise boys have made another one of their podcasts. Now listen, they are as filthy as sailors, so expect some blue language that would make yo’ momma blush, but as far as I’m concerned, they talk me up and say good things about me, so really they can swear as much as they like. https://soundcloud.com/harrogate-noise is their soundcloud address.
I mentioned this last week, but over summer I am doing a few free “in aid of the community” (NB: NOT community service, I no longer have to do that) shows in Knaresborough this year. Saturday 14th June is the Knaresborough Bed Race, and once more Henshaws are running their very successful “BedFest” that day. I’m DJ’ing and comparing that, before jumping into a solid gold helicopter to get to Rehab, as that night is England’s world cup opening game against Italy, and me and Liam Grey are hosting a special night of music around it. The game is on at 11pm and I’ve always fancied having a live game with the commentary on in the middle of a night of great music. It will be a long day, but (for the bit I’m doing for free) it will be worth it just to see the smiles on the blah blah blah. Mainly it will be worth it for the vast sums of money I am hoping to earn after I’ve done the right thing. I will also be DJing at this years Feva “Picnic in the park” live music day, which is on Saturday 16th August. I’m looking forward to that as The MG Band are playing, whom I like. The other bands are also meant to be great, but I’ve got months to talk that up and ram it down your throat innit? More on that next week! In the meantime if you would like anything ramming down your throat don’t forget to come and see me this Sunday at Rehab at my “May the 4th be with you – Starwars Day” Bottom of the Bottle. Or do any of that other stuff I’ve mentioned. It’s all good. Here are this weeks listings.

The exact same bit of SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION I used the week before last week AND the week before AND aaaaand the week before that. Pretty much since the dawn of time actually. Let’s face it, you’ve stopped reading already. I mean, I’ve said “you’ve stopped reading already haven’t you” and not one person has said “yes”. Fine, whatever, NANANANANANA I’m not listening to you either.
Should you wish to listen to some of my actual Dj’ing from the comfort of your own home, you can do that at Mixcloud.com/djtrevuk but really I’d much rather you can out and partied, not for my financial gain you understand, but for your emotional wellbeing.
Thanks for reading, drink responsibly and don’t be loose with your affections.
