One of North Yorkshire’s best-known legal brand names, Newtons Solicitors, has spread to the North East.
Hodgsons & Mortimer Solicitors, which was acquired by husband-and-wife legal team, Chris and Sarah Newton, in 2013, has re-branded its Richmond and Darlington offices to Newtons Solicitors.
The name change creates seven Newtons Solicitors Group offices across North Yorkshire and Teesside.
Newtons Solicitors has also appointed commercial property lawyer, Gareth Jones, as an LLP partner to head the new Darlington office which has relocated to prestigious, listed four-storey offices on Coniscliffe Road, built in the 1830s and acquired for £285,000.
Gareth Jones, who joins with his client following, was previously at the Stockton office of national law firm DWF and York-based Denison Till. He is experienced in development work and advises developers, investors, social housing providers, NHS Trusts and banks.
Chris Newton, who founded Newtons Solicitors with his wife, Sarah in 2009, said: Gareth Jones is a heavyweight commercial property lawyer and is a great addition to our growing corporate team. We are pleased to welcome him and his loyal client following which has created a strong commercial presence for us in the North East virtually overnight.
Together with other recent appointments, including Sally Robinson, Steve Rae, Nick Hodgson and John Paice, we have a very strong commercial property team in an experienced corporate department which recruited James Towler from Langleys, York, last year. This is particularly important now that the economy is starting to grow.
Hodgsons & Mortimer was founded by brothers Nick and Richard Hodgson in 1995. Although the practice has changed its name to Newtons Solicitors, it remains a separate business entity to the rest of the group which also has offices in Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon, Leyburn and York.
The Newtons Solicitors Group, which made 14 new fee-earner appointments in 2013, has a £2.5m turnover. The firm operates across a broad spectrum of commercial and private law legal disciplines.
