Last chance to give a view on non-household waste disposal

People in North Yorkshire have until the end of next week to make observations on changes to the rules governing the acceptance of non-household waste such as soil and rubble at household waste recycling centres.

The proposed changes are part of a package of measures aimed at ensuring that the county council remains on track to achieve millions of pounds in savings as a result of Government funding cuts

North Yorkshire’s HWRC service currently costs £5.9 million; the county council needs to save £240,000 from that figure in 2014/15, but may need to save more in future.

The council is seeking opinions on whether the HWRCs should no longer accept these wastes, or if its contractors should make a charge to customers to cover their costs.

Responses received in the county-wide consultation so far indicate people want HWRCs to accept soil and rubble waste but at a charge, and this should be applied at all of the council’s household waste recycling centres, not just the larger ones. It is also clear that people think the council should treat plasterboard waste in the same way.

David Bowe, Corporate Director of Business and Environmental Services said:

We urge people to give their views on these proposals and all responses will be used to inform the final report and recommendations to County Councillors.

It is important to tell us what you think, so we can continue to deal with these types of waste in a fair manner that causes the least amount of inconvenience to customers using the HWRCs.

For further details of the proposal and to let the Council know what you think:

Responses to be received no later than 22 December 2013.

A decision will be made in February and any changes will be communicated via the local media, website and at the household waste recycling centres.
