Serious burns to hand following house fire

A man received serious burns to his hands following a house fire on Newby Crescent in Harrogate.

Two fire engines from the Harrogate station attended the house at 04:09 on Friday 22 November 2013.

Upon arrival they found that a man and his dog had already rescued themselves from a first floor window.

Four fire fighters entered the building wearing breathing apparatus and used two hose-reels to extinguished the fire. t had started in an under stairs cupboard and involved clothes and other household items.

The fire caused damage to the cupboard itself and smoke damage to the hallway. Fire crews used thermal imaging to ensure the fire was fully out and then vented the building with fans to remove smoke.

The man was taken to Harrogate hospital before being transferred to Pinderfields where he is receiving specialist treatment for burns to his hand.

Police and fire investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
