Distraction burglary reports involving ‘smartly dressed men’ in Ripon

9 August 2013

Detectives are urging residents to be alert after concerns that a pair of distraction burglars may be operating in the Ripon area.

Officers received two reports on Thursday 8 August 2013, that two smartly-dressed men had visited properties on Oak Road and Kangel Close carrying clip boards and claiming to be from the council.

Fortunately, they were turned away by suspicious householders, however officers would like to remind people to remain vigilant.

Detective Constable Chris Spackman, of Harrogate CID, said:

PoliceI would urge local residents to check the identification of anyone visiting their homes offering to sell anything, repair anything or offering any other kind of service.

Genuine callers will be happy to wait while you check them out and I can’t stress the importance of verifying a caller’s ID.

I also urge people to keep an eye on any elderly or vulnerable neighbours and report anyone acting suspiciously in their area.

These men are well-dressed and would not look out of place, so please remain on your guard at all times.

If you would like to report any suspicious activity in your area, please contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 – select option 1 – and pass information to the Force Control Room

If it is an emergency always call 999.

If you prefer not to give you name, the independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111.
