Work starts on Premier Inn Harrogate

6 August 2013

A new six-storey, 107-bedroom Premier Inn hotel will be located on Springfield Avenue in Harrogate and will be directly linked to the Harrogate International Conference Centre.

Russells Construction has been appointed to undertake the work.

The Premier Inn will offer a Thyme restaurant and bar, together with parking facilities. Designed by Durham architect the Howarth Litchfield Partnership, the Premier Inn will be finished in local York Stone in keeping with the historic spa town’s vernacular.

The one-year programme will see Russells construct the building using steel frame with concrete floors, with handover set for next June. The building has been forward funded by the British Steel Pension Fund.

Andrew Russell, managing director of Russells Construction, said:

Hotel development continues to be a strong area and our experience in the sector in recent years puts Russells in a good position to be competitive and to deliver.

It is a sector in which we have invested time and expertise and I am particularly pleased that our innovative and successful delivery of the Premier Inn at Dale Street in Manchester has contributed to our being selected for this project.

Harrogate’s International Conference Centre is the third largest in the UK, and one of the biggest in Europe. It welcomes more than 155,000 business visitors annually and brings more than £50million to the local economy.

Situated in the north of the town centre, the hotel will provide a new option for business travellers. Is proximity to the main shopping and leisure area, and the railway station, is likely to make the hotel also attractive for tourists.

Simon Kent, Harrogate International Centre director, said:

Obviously the thousands of conference and exhibition visitors who come to Harrogate each year need additional accommodation so it’s fantastic news for us that Russells have begun building the new Premier Inn.

At HIC we are working hard to bring more events to Harrogate so it’s good to be able to rely on our partners in the hospitality industry to provide the best possible stay for visitors to the region.
