Dirty stops out – Dj Trev’s guide to places where it changes when the sun goes down

18 July 2013

THURSDAY 18th July

Scapegoat Kelly are at the Blues Bar tonight. I think they have a monthly residency there or something, loads of people like these guys so go see why.

The Alexandra has live music every Thursday, currently though Loz ain’t sent me his new line up for the next few months so your guess is as good as mine. Actually your guess is probably better than mine, I would guess that the band playing are some kind of futuristic lobster/human hybrid, called Claws of Armageddon. Which seems unlikely on reflection.

Viper Rooms have their regular Thursday night called “Y.O.L.O.” tonight, playing R’n’B and stuff, if you find that no matter how hard you try you simply cannot get your baseball cap on fully pointing forwards and it kind of goes off to the side, this night will be right up your street.

Rehab has Dj Tex upstairs at their regular Thursday night called “FLEX ” tonight, playing R’n’B and stuff, if you find that no matter how hard you try you simply cannot get your baseball cap on fully pointing forwards and it kind of goes off to the side, this night will be right up your street.

Downstairs at Rehab they have their regular Thursday night called “Dj Trev’s regular Thursday night downstairs at Rehab” tonight, Playing Rock and stuff, if you find that no matter how hard you try you simply cannot get your hair right, you should go and see Dj Trev and realize things could be much much worse. At least he’s not playing R’n’B.

FRIDAY 19th July

My top tip’s tend to be on Fridays, dunno why that is…. I guess places are just working harder for your money on a Friday, something which, as a “professional dee-jay” I know all about, sometimes having to work up to 13 hours a week.

Actually, I think the reason my top tips tend to be on Fridays is that I’m working in Leeds on them, so I can be fair and even handed in dishing out recommendations, whereas if I’m in town I’m not really going to recommend you go to some other dude’s night am I? Although really, you should. I am terrible. Just ask the bewildered lady who gave me a tirade of abuse the other night, as I was playing a band that “no one likes”. In fairness I was playing a fairly obscure act, they are a new beat group from Liverpool called “The Beatles” and I agree wholeheartedly with the Jamie Lee Curtis on a bad day look-a-like, those guys will never catch on.

Anyway, bitterness and murderous outrage aside, I do have two tips for tonight:

Tip the first: The Geek Pub Quiz which is on at Retro Bar. I’ve been highly recommended this night and thus have recommended it myself in that past. Apparently there’s lots of retro style prizes to be won and it’s meant to be a real good laugh.

Tip the second: Down at Zoso this week their Friday night live sesh has Bear trade, Folk with Fire and Bad Hair Cuts. This is an NYHC gig – The NYHC have been running underground punk gigs in Harrogate for what Tim Westwood would say is “a minute” and they are really good at it, and are all cool guys.

The Shooters are playing the blues bar tonight. I kind of feel bad not giving them a top tip, but I don’t know what they are like. The Blues is a great bar though and I imagine in this weather with their great big beer garden called the Stray right outside, they are somehow getting by even without my specifically pointing you in that direction.

SATURDAY 20th July

Cherry Lee Mewis is playing this Saturday at The Blues Bar. Now, I actually did go onto her website to try and listen to some of her music, but for some reason my broadband wasn’t good enough to hear anything (this is definitely not anything to do with any specialist Dutch films I may or may not be currently downloading) but there were some photo’s of her on there and she is fit so it wasn’t a total waste of my time. I’m kind of in a catch 22 situation right here, because talented people don’t like it when you reduce them to how good they look and I don’t want to offend her, but she is tidy and has to understand that I have NO talent and have had to make my way through life relying on my incredible good looks. So really, I envy her combo of looks and ability. that is, assuming she’s good, as discussed, I’ve not heard her music, so why not go down and let me know?

I’ve got this Saturday off as A) I’m playing a national 6-a-side tournament (that’s right, Athletic AND good looking, read it and weep Peter Beardsely) and 2) I’ll be out with my brother in the evening wetting the baby’s head. I toyed with the idea of mentioning the fact I’d become an uncle again last week and decided that this column was one sentence away from just becoming a blog, whereas this week I have stuck so thoroughly to the facts and not mentioned anything other than “what’s on” (well what else am I going to talk about, Lobster/human hybrids?) so this week I can sneak it in. Congratulations Stu and Lizzie!

Actually, I think I did mention it last week too.

Yep, I’ve just looked, I totally did.

Hmm, well, if you’ve not already, you can buy me a pint (I like pale ale’s, I would say Daleside Blonde but I am still waiting for my “DJ Trev drinks Daleside Blond” branded Ford Escort to arrive) to celebrate and we’ll call it evens.

Aaaaanyway, this means some one else will be Djing at the Den tonight. I don’t know who though, as when I have a night off I get into that “holiday” mode that people who work in customer services seem to get into every Friday, and I just don’t care.

It’s mainly business as usual on Saturday then, Rehab has two floors open and is free to get in as is Revolution, also with two rooms. Viper Rooms is also open for clubbing and over the road Moko Lounge has Alex Simmons on. Lure Bar is open but I’m not really sure what they are doing there, there’s been a change of ownership though so if you ain’t been in for a while it might be worth checking out.

SUNDAY 21st July

The Blues Bar always has a full day of live music on Sundays, this week they’ve got The Travis Reilly band at the Blues in the Afternoon and The Matt Goldberg Band in the evening.

Also in the live field, the quite new Sunday Soundcheck at The Alexandra tonight has Jim Thistlethwaite playing live along side some other people. Jim does a neat cover of a talking Heads tune and has been around the block more than a Ford Escort, I think The Alex’s Sundays are going to be really good so why not give it a try?

There are also the usual clubbing option on for a Sunday, Viper rooms holds it’s “Peek-a-boo” night which is at the Urban end of things, whilst I’m up at Rehab playing my requests type night, which is at the “have a really good night until someone comes up and demands you stop playing really literally whatever it is you are playing and put on something wholly inappropriate like The Theme tune to Bodger and Badger, because it will really make their one drunk mate who’s slumped in a corner cheer up” end of the wonderful spectrum of auido amazement that is music.

Well, I’m gonna try wrap this up in a hurry, as I’ve just been and given blood and feel like I deserve a nap. Actually, I want to go to bed because I’m depressed, as when I went and gave blood they forgot to give me my Midi-chlorian count.

MONDAY 22nd July

Up at the Alexander, Dj Pieman’s Pub Quiz is on, two weeks ago someone won his rollover Jack Pot “money shot” feature, which means that it is currently sitting around the mere £200 mark. £200? Could you imagine winning that on a Monday? You would be richer than your wildest dreams. And I have some pretty wild dreams.

Dj’s Max & Jake have taken over Monday’s at Zoso, replacing the open mic night, but you can still get an open mic session at The Blues Bar with Pete Oliver, whilst now at Zoso Max & Jake are good up and coming Dj’s so this actually means there a bit more range on offer on Monday nights, plus round the corner at Moko Lounge the karaoki night is a good laugh too.

This is taking too long, let’s make Tuesday’s briefer yet:

TUESDAY 23rd July

Thomas ford plays at the Blues Bar

There is the Folk night at the Tap n’ Spile.

There are two rooms open at Moko, in the VIP Room Jaey Selway presents her Rock Box, playing alternative and hard rock anthems, whilst in the main room Dee J Wyer plays upfront stuff.

Zoso plays host to The Electro Jam continues which is kind of an “open Decks” Dj session.

There is a night on at Revolution now on Tuesdays, but I don’t know what it’s called. When I was there on Tuesdays the night was called “Tueslife” which was my idea, and pretty much the best name for a Tuesday night ever. So if it’s called that the cheque better be in the post.

WEDNESDAYS 24th July

Wednesdays, to the best of my knowledge, are always :

Dj pieman at Rehab

Paul Middleton’s Angst band swearing through the night at The Blues Bar.

SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION

Every week I put some kind of an internet radio show together for harrogatealternativeradio.co.uk and it gets broadcast Saturdays 10pm to midnight and again on Thursdays at 2pm. It’s not exactly a tour de force of presenting as I tend to say “um” and “er” before I say anything. But the music is quite good and it’s better than listening to The Saturdays. I put up my old shows on mixcloud.com/djtrevuk when I get round to it or remember, and if you have any questions, such as “how do you manage to fit all that in around your 13 hours of actual work” you can befriend me on facebook.com/djtrev who knows, we could become chums and end up going out partying. As obviously I need things to take up my time. No mentals please.

Thanks for reading, drink responsibly and don’t be loose with your affections.
