It’s Yellow jerseys all round as Monkbar Hotel cycle team complete Tour De France challenge

13 July 2013

Fund-raisers from a York Hotel have completed a 242-mile charity cycle challenge in a yellow jersey- winning time!

The eight employees from the BEST WESTERN Monkbar Hotel took just two-and-a-half hours to pedal the same distance as the Yorkshire leg of next year’s Tour de France Grand Depart.

The team – who were cycling a combined distance of 242-miles – undertook the challenge along the York-Selby cycleway in aid of Martin House Children’s Hospice – a charity it has supported for more than six years.

BEST WESTERN Monkbar Hotel general manager Graham Usher said:

Because the Tour de France is just 12 months away we wanted to mark this significant date with our own cycling challenge.

As the majority of us aren’t even a quarter way to being as fit as Sir Chris Hoy or Sir Bradley Wiggins, we chose the Selby-York cycle path as, unlike the route the professionals will be taking next July, it’s nice and flat.

And, even though we weren’t racing against each other, we had set ourselves a maximum time of four hours

Even though I say it myself, we set a blistering pace and were very pleased with a time of two-and-a-half hours.

I’d like to thank my seven colleagues for making it a very enjoyable experience. In addition to getting a little bit fitter, we managed to raise £500 for Martin House Hospice.

Team Monkbar comprised of general manager Graham Usher, sales manager Nikki Brannan, deputy manager Andrew Jones, food services manager Robert Webster, conference porter Neil Hudson, duty manager Paul Neesam, and food and beverage assistants, Adam Atkinson and Lloyd Pattison.
